Discover the Gallen-Kallela Museum
Minna | 25.3.2026
Nestled on the shores of Laajalahti Bay in Espoo, just west of Helsinki, the Gallen‑Kallela Museum offers visitors a unique blend of art, architecture, and Finnish cultural history. Housed in Tarvaspää, studio‑castle designed and built by the artist Akseli Gallen‑Kallela between 1911 and 1913, the museum is one of Finland’s most atmospheric cultural destinations.
A Home Built by an Artist
Akseli Gallen‑Kallela (1865–1931) was one of Finland’s most celebrated painters, known for his illustrations of The Kalevala, Finland’s national epic, and for his versatile work across painting, graphics, and design.
Today, the museum preserves this unique environment. With its signature white tower, steep roofs, and surrounding gardens, Tarvaspää remains an architectural landmark that perfectly complements the rugged natural beauty of the area.
Art, Exhibitions, and Collections
The Gallen‑Kallela Museum presents changing exhibitions that explore both the artist’s own work and the cultural environment of his time. Visitors can discover oil paintings, graphic works, sketches, and personal items that shed light on Gallen‑Kallela’s life, creative process, and influence on visual culture.
The museum is currently presenting the Con amore exhibition, and will next open the Sunshine and Joy of Life exhibition, running from 12 June to 18 October 2026.
A Visit Filled with Nature and Culture
Surrounded by forests, shoreline paths, and gardens, the museum is an ideal day trip for travelers seeking a peaceful yet culturally rich destination.
The on‑site Café Zoceria Tarvaspää offers refreshments in a historic setting, extending outdoors into the garden during the warmer months—perfect for combining art with a relaxing break in nature.
