Authentication Research Service

Do You Own a Work by Akseli Gallen-Kallela?

Do you suspect that a work you own could be painted by Akseli Gallen-Kallela? Would you like to learn more about the work or offer it for loan for exhibitions?

The Gallen-Kallela Museum offers you an artwork authentication research service. There is often a queue for artwork identifications, so you should be prepared for a waiting time of several months.

The first hour is free of charge, after that we charge €120 per hour. The museum does not provide written certificates of authenticity or price estimates.

Before contacting us:

  • Take good clear photos of both the front and back of the work. Pay particular attention to the signatures and inscriptions on the back of the work.
  • Measure the image area of the work.
  • Find available information on the history of the work: place of purchase, previous owners, exhibitions, history of the work.
  • Compile this information and contact the museum's collections manager by email.

Photographs and background information help to establish basic information about the work, but are often not enough for identification. It is therefore a good idea to be prepared to bring the work to the museum for further research. Works can only be brought to the museum for identification at a time agreed in advance with the Head of Collections.
