Con amore – Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s graphic art (14 February – 31 May 2026)
The exhibition examines Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s role as a pioneer of Finnish graphic art and a developer of graphic expression. The exhibition highlights Gallen-Kallela’s versatility in the field of graphic art, from his early works created in 1895–1896 to those from the mid-1910s, as well as his modern commercial graphics, such as the iconic Bil-Bol poster.
Gallen-Kallela’s graphic art, which emphasises black-and-white expression, received well-deserved international attention, especially among the Die Brücke group, whereas in Finland his contemporaries rejected the minimalist paper-based artworks.
Working with printmaking brought the artist great joy: “If there was any hope that I could earn something with my woodblock prints, I would rather work on them, for I truly make them con amore”.
The exhibition has been curated by the art historian Elias Djupsjö (MA) in cooperation with the Gallen-Kallela Museum.
