Image Services and Information for Researchers

The Gallen-Kallela Museum is a centre of information about Akseli Gallen-Kallela. We help students, researchers and professionals in various fields to find the right materials.

Image Services

The digitised material of the Gallen-Kallela Museum is freely available on Flickr and Finna (CC BY 4.0 licence).

If the image you are looking for is not available on the above services, you can send an image request to the Head of the Collection responsible for the museum's image collection.

You can request publishable image files of works, objects and old photographs from the museum's collection.

The enquiry must indicate:

  • which image is the subject of the enquiry
  • the intended use of the image
  • the desired size of the image

The delivery time for the images is approximately 1-2 weeks.

A fee will be charged for the use of images submitted via the image request, depending on the purpose for which the image is to be used. The basic price for publications for cultural use (non-commercial) is 80 € . For more detailed prices, please contact the museum.

For Researchers

We are happy to help you with your research on Gallen-Kallela. Tell us about your research topic and what specific data you want to study or what question you need help with. If necessary, we can arrange a time for you to come and examine the museum's collections and archives. Please contact the Head of the Collection at least a couple of weeks before the desired visit.

The personal archive of Akseli Gallen-Kallela is kept at the National Archives of Finland. The materials can be examined at the National Archives with the permission of the State Archivist (Director General). The archives of the Finnish National Gallery also contain materials related to Gallen-Kallela.

Letters in Museums Collections

The museum's collection includes letters received by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The letters sent by Akseli Gallen-Kallela are kept in the archives of the recipients.

To examine the letters in the museum's collection, you need a research permit, which is issued by the Museum Director.

Gallen-Kallela Museum

Designed and built by artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931), the Tarvaspää Studio Castle presents temporary exhibitions of the art and life of Gallen-Kallela and his contemporaries, as well as contemporary art. The museum offers a wide range of activities and events and serves as a centre of information on Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
